Where to Stay in Lisbon: The Best Areas for Different Trips

For most first-time visitors, stay in **Baixa/Chiado**. It gives you the best balance of walking, metro access, restaurants and easy reach of Alfama, Bairro Alto and the waterfront. Choose **Alfama** for atmosphere and hills, **Príncipe Real** for restaurants and design, and **Avenida da Liberdade** for a calmer, more polished base.

This is the safest first-trip base because several versions of Lisbon meet here. The river, Rossio, Alfama edge, Bairro Alto and transport toward Belém or other districts are all accessible without committing to a steep residential hill every morning.

Alfama is the atmosphere-first choice: lanes, miradouros, tiled facades and the oldest-city feel. The trade-off is elevation. Check the exact taxi access and stairs before booking a romantic-looking apartment with heavy luggage.

Príncipe Real works especially well for three or four nights when restaurants, bars, independent shops and a more contemporary Lisbon feel matter as much as the old city.

Avenida offers larger hotels, flatter access and strong metro connections. It is a practical family or comfort-first base, especially when you want to return to quieter streets after sightseeing.

Choose **Baixa/Chiado** by default, **Alfama** for atmosphere, and **Príncipe Real** when the neighbourhood itself should improve dinners and evenings.
