Kansai's anti-Kyoto: food-first, fast-paced, informal.
Osaka is Japan's food city — Dotonbori's neon signs, takoyaki and okonomiyaki streets, Kuromon market mornings — and a city that runs looser than Tokyo or Kyoto. Three to four nights works as a Kansai base for Osaka itself plus day trips to Kyoto, Nara, or Himeji; two if you're only stopping for the food.
