EAST ASIA · SOUTH KOREA · 1–5 DAYS

Seoul.

Five days minimum — the city rewards depth, not coverage.
WHY SEOUL

Districts that read like different cities, food that doesn't stop.

Seoul is dense in a way that rewards planning by district, not landmark — Bukchon and Insadong for tradition, Gangnam for modern, Hongdae and Itaewon for nightlife, Seongsu and Yeonnam for current-cool. Five days is the sweet spot for first trips; less and the city feels rushed, more and you start covering the same ground.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Late April–May, October–early November.

Cherry blossoms in spring, autumn foliage at Bukhansan in fall. July–August is hot, humid, rainy; January–February cold but cheap and the food works year-round.

WEATHER & CROWD
When Seoul is best
Late April through May (cherry blossoms, then mild walking weather) and October through early November (autumn foliage) are the two strongest windows. July–August: hot, humid, monsoon rain. December–February: cold, dry, the food and indoor scenes still work.

Trip fit

Seoul works best for…

Use these six planning lenses to decide whether the destination fits the shape, pace, and wider route you actually want to travel.

First trips to Seoul
Seoul is a strong first East Asian city when you want a high-density modern metro that still has serious palace, food, and shopping anchors.
Short city breaks
Five to six nights is the right scale; four feels tight, seven lets you add the DMZ or a Busan high-speed day.
Multi-stop routes
It pairs naturally with Busan via KTX (2.5 hr) and as the gateway for a Korea-plus-Japan multi-country route.
Balanced pacing
The city rewards district-by-district planning — pick a neighborhood per day rather than crisscrossing for landmarks.
Food and neighborhoods
Korean BBQ in Mapo, café culture in Yeonnam, night markets in Gwangjang, and Seongsu's contemporary cafés shape Seoul more than monuments.
Good trip pairings
Pairs especially well with Busan (KTX), Gyeongju (cultural counterweight), or a longer Korea + Japan trip via Fukuoka ferry.
PLANNING NOTES
How to shape Seoul
01
Get a T-money card on day one — the metro is the trip's backbone and walking-only days don't work.
02
Book Gyeongbokgung at sunrise for the changing-of-the-guard ceremony or after 4pm to dodge tour crowds.
03
Five nights is the right base; add a sixth for the DMZ day, or a seventh if you want to overnight at a temple stay.
Neighbourhoods

Neighbourhoods to know

5 distinct characters. Most strong Seoul trips pick a base, then layer two or three more.

Traditional · hanok

Bukchon & Insadong

The hanok village + traditional crafts strip — old Korea visually, slow walking pace.

Modern · luxury

Gangnam

South of the river — modern Seoul, glass towers, designer shopping, the K-pop image. Useful but easy to skip on first trips.

Nightlife · students

Hongdae

University area — the densest live music, street food, late-night scene. The youngest, loudest part of the city.

International · food

Itaewon

Historically the foreign-resident district; now Seoul's most international restaurant strip. Mosques to mezze — a different city.

Cafés · contemporary

Seongsu

Brooklyn-ish industrial neighborhood — Seoul's current café and design epicenter, weekends are packed.

Seoul FAQ

Things travellers usually want to know before Seoul.

How many days do you need in Seoul?

Five nights minimum, six is the sweet spot. The city is dense enough that three or four days flatten it — you cover the headline sights but miss the neighborhood depth that makes the trip distinctive.

Do I need a K-ETA before arrival?

Yes — most visa-free nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, etc.) need a pre-arrival K-ETA, applied for through the official portal at least three days before travel. The fee is low; approval is usually within 24 hours.

Where should you stay?

Myeongdong or Jongno for first-time central access (palaces, shopping, transit hub); Hongdae for nightlife and younger energy; Gangnam if you want modern Seoul as the primary frame. Avoid hotels far from a subway station.

How does the Seoul metro work?

Buy a T-money card at any convenience store and load with cash — it covers all metro, bus, and even taxis. Every station has English signage and announcements; major lines are color-coded with consistent stop numbering. The metro is the trip's spine.

Should I visit the DMZ?

Yes for first-time visitors interested in the post-war geopolitical context. Tours are mandatory and run as half-day from Seoul. Book through reputable operators; the JSA portion (closer to the actual border) requires more advance booking than the standard DMZ tour.

Is Seoul walkable?

Some neighborhoods (Bukchon, Insadong, Hongdae) are walkable individually, but the city is large enough that the metro is essential for inter-neighborhood travel. Walking-only days don't work in Seoul.

Is Seoul safe?

Among the safest big cities in the world. Petty crime is rare, late-night transit is safe, and lost items are routinely returned. Standard precautions are more than enough.

What's the biggest planning mistake?

Trying to cover Seoul in three or four days. The city is genuinely deep; trading a Seoul day for Busan or Suwon usually weakens the trip. Pick one extension (Busan + Gyeongju or Jeju) rather than trying to add three.
