Koh Samui.

Gulf of Thailand's third-largest island — Chaweng beach + serious wellness retreats + ferry access to Koh Phangan.
WHY KOH SAMUI

Upscale Gulf-coast island with international airport and easy connections to Phangan + Tao.

Koh Samui is the Gulf of Thailand's main island — palm-lined beaches, more resort polish than the Andaman side, and Ko Phangan / Ko Tao within easy boat reach. Five to seven nights is the right scale; less than four and the boat / flight effort isn't worth it.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

February–April, August–September.

Note: Koh Samui's monsoon timing is OPPOSITE to the Andaman coast — peak is May–September, with October–December bringing rain. February through April are the sweet spot.

Trip fit

Koh Samui works best for…

Use these six planning lenses to decide whether the destination fits the shape, pace, and wider route you actually want to travel.

First trips to Koh Samui
Koh Samui suits travelers wanting a Gulf-of-Thailand beach base with resort polish and easy hops to Phangan and Tao.
Short city breaks
Five to seven nights — base beach days + Ang Thong day + one Phangan or Tao excursion fills the trip.
Multi-stop routes
It works as the south leg of a Bangkok + Koh Samui route, or paired with Ko Phangan and Ko Tao for an island-hopping week.
Balanced pacing
The island rewards beach-and-resort pacing — one excursion every other day rather than back-to-back tours.
Food and neighborhoods
Beachfront seafood restaurants, the Fisherman's Village night market in Bophut, and Lamai's quieter food scene shape the rhythm.
Good trip pairings
Pairs naturally with Ko Phangan, Ko Tao, or as a Gulf-side counterweight to a Bangkok-only trip.
PLANNING NOTES
How to shape Koh Samui
01
Pick your beach side: Chaweng for energy and nightlife, Bophut and Maenam for quieter family-friendly, Lamai as middle-ground.
02
Day-trip to Ang Thong Marine Park as one focused boat day, not as a casual add-on.
03
Don't fly into Koh Samui via Bangkok unless your dates lock it in — the train + ferry combo via Surat Thani is cheaper and scenic.

Koh Samui FAQ

Things travellers usually want to know before Koh Samui.

How many days do you need on Koh Samui?

Four to five nights. One day Chaweng + Lamai beach rhythm, one day Fisherman's Village + Big Buddha temple, one day Ang Thong Marine Park, optional fourth for Koh Phangan or Koh Tao extension. Less and the surrounding-islands range gets cut.

When should I NOT visit Koh Samui?

October through December — Gulf monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas. November is the worst single month. The weather is opposite to Phuket/Krabi's Andaman timing; first-time Thailand travellers often plan against the wrong monsoon. February–April are the sweet spot.

Where should you stay?

Chaweng for first-time access + restaurants + nightlife. Bophut/Fisherman's Village for upscale + atmosphere + Friday Walking Street. Choeng Mon for quieter family beaches. Maenam for slower local feel. Match to the trip's tone; Chaweng works for most first-time visitors.

Is Koh Samui better than Phuket?

Different. Koh Samui is smaller, calmer, less developed (but still upscale). Phuket is bigger, more diverse beach options, stronger Old Town culture. Koh Samui has easier Koh Phangan + Koh Tao extensions; Phuket has Phi Phi + Krabi. Pick by which neighbouring islands match your interest.

Should I visit Koh Phangan?

Yes — 30-minute ferry, can be day trip or 1–3 night extension. Phangan has both the Full Moon Party (Haad Rin) and quieter beaches (Bottle Beach, Thong Nai Pan). Match the visit to your interest: party crowd for Haad Rin, quieter beaches everywhere else.

What about Koh Tao for diving?

Yes if diving is the trip — Koh Tao is one of Asia's best (and cheapest) Open Water certification destinations. 1.5-hour ferry from Samui; expect 2–4 nights for full certification course. Strong combination as Samui + Tao for a beach-and-diving trip.

Should I rent a scooter?

Carefully — Koh Samui has high motorcycle accident rates. Rentals are 200–300 baht/day. Check insurance, helmet quality. Songthaew taxis (shared red trucks) work for short distances along main roads at reasonable rates. Consider trade-offs seriously.

What's the biggest planning mistake?

Booking November or December stays. The Gulf monsoon brings serious rain at that time. First-time Thailand travellers often assume monsoon dates apply everywhere; for Koh Samui specifically, target February–April or August–September.
