EUROPE · CZECH REPUBLIC · 1–5 DAYS

Prague.

The medieval core works once you escape it for the right evenings.
WHY PRAGUE

Bohemian density, real beer, neighborhoods past the bridge.

Prague is the rare big European city where the medieval core wasn't bombed flat — Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, the Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle are all real, but they're also the parts that get most crowded. Four nights lets you split between the iconic anchor day, Malá Strana wandering, the Jewish Quarter, and Vyšehrad or Vinohrady for evenings that don't feel like tourist Prague.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Late April–June, September–October.

Warm-but-walkable, manageable Charles Bridge crowds, terrace evenings. December for the Christmas markets; July–August fine but the Old Town becomes unwalkable midday.

Trip fit

Prague works best for…

Use these six planning lenses to decide whether the destination fits the shape, pace, and wider route you actually want to travel.

First trips to Prague
Prague is a strong first central-European city when you want medieval anchors at scale with serious beer, food, and atmospheric evenings.
Short city breaks
Four to five nights is the right scale; less feels rushed, more without a Český Krumlov or Kutná Hora day starts repeating.
Multi-stop routes
It pairs naturally with Vienna and Berlin on a central Europe rail route.
Balanced pacing
The city rewards a one-anchor-a-day plus one neighbourhood evening rhythm — stacking sights inside the historic core is what flattens it.
Food and neighborhoods
Vinohrady's wine bars, Karlín's new-wave restaurants, and traditional pubs like U Zlatého Tygra shape the trip more than the Old Town's tourist restaurants.
Good trip pairings
Pairs especially well with Vienna, Český Krumlov, Dresden, or Berlin on a rail-based central Europe loop.
PLANNING NOTES
How to shape Prague
01
Cross Charles Bridge at sunrise or after 10pm; midday is unwalkable in peak season.
02
Stay in Vinohrady, Žižkov, or Karlín rather than Old Town — better food, real locals, easy tram in.
03
Book Prague Castle's St Vitus + Old Royal Palace + Basilica ticket bundle online — same-day tickets work but the queues at the gate can kill an hour.
Neighbourhoods

Neighbourhoods to know

5 distinct characters. Most strong Prague trips pick a base, then layer two or three more.

Old Town (Staré Město)

Old Town Square, Astronomical Clock, Jewish Quarter — unavoidable but most crowded. Cross at dawn or late evening.

Castle side · romantic

Malá Strana

Across Charles Bridge — Baroque palaces, the John Lennon Wall, climbs up to the Castle. Quieter than Old Town.

Cafés · residential

Vinohrady

Belle Époque buildings, wine bars, the city's strongest café and restaurant district outside the tourist core. Where to stay.

Pubs · bohemian

Žižkov

Working-class district with the highest pub-per-capita ratio in Europe. Unpretentious, real, an evening counterweight to the medieval core.

Reborn · contemporary

Karlín

Former industrial district reborn with new-wave restaurants and design boutiques. Where Prague is moving.

Prague FAQ

Things travellers usually want to know before Prague.

How many days do you need in Prague?

Four to five nights is the sweet spot. Three works for the Old Town + Castle + Jewish Quarter but the trip thins without a Vinohrady or Karlín evening. Six only if you add Český Krumlov or Kutná Hora.

Where should you stay?

Vinohrady, Žižkov, or Karlín rather than Old Town — better food, real locals, easy tram in. Avoid Wenceslas Square hotels — convenient on a map, but the area is touristy and the scammy clubs cluster there.

When should I cross Charles Bridge?

Sunrise (before 7am) or after 10pm. Midday is unwalkable from May through October — the bridge becomes a slow scrum of tour groups. Early morning is also the best photo light.

Is Prague Castle worth a full day?

Yes — the castle complex (St Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane) is large enough for a half-day, and pairing it with the Malá Strana neighborhood walk down to Charles Bridge makes a strong full day.

Is Prague safe?

Generally yes. The main risks are pickpocketing on tram 22 (the route to the Castle) and around the Astronomical Clock, plus scam currency-exchange booths. Pre-paid currency cards or ATMs are the safe option; never use a street-corner exchange.

How does the metro work?

Three lines, color-coded, clean and reliable. Buy a 24-hour or 3-day DPP pass at any vending machine — it covers metro, trams, and buses. Validate single tickets on entry; failure to validate is a real fine.

Is the beer actually that good?

Yes — Czech beer culture is genuinely world-class. Skip the chain pubs in Old Town; go to U Zlatého Tygra, Pivovarský Klub, or any Vinohrady micro-pub. Pilsner Urquell on tap is the basic version of excellent.

What's the biggest planning mistake?

Staying in Old Town and eating in Old Town. The Old Town restaurants are the worst-quality-for-money in the city. Stay outside it, eat outside it, visit it during the day, return for an early-morning Charles Bridge walk.
