Brno.

Moravia's university city — modernist architecture, Špilberk, and serious wine country an hour south.
WHY BRNO

Smaller than Prague, more architectural, with wine country at the edge.

Brno is the Czech Republic's second city — a Moravian university town with a serious modernist-architecture layer (Villa Tugendhat is a UNESCO Mies van der Rohe house), the Špilberk fortress on the hill, and a wine-country hinterland an hour to the south. Two nights covers the old town, Špilberk, Villa Tugendhat, and one Moravian wine afternoon; three if Lednice-Valtice or Olomouc is added.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Late April–June, September–October.

Terrace weather without the summer crowds. October for the Moravian wine harvest and the Sturm-equivalent burčák. December for a more local-feeling Christmas market; July–August warm but the city is calmer than Prague.

Trip fit

Brno works best for…

Use these six planning lenses to decide whether the destination fits the shape, pace, and wider route you actually want to travel.

First trips to Brno
Brno suits travellers who want a Czech city that isn't Prague — smaller, more architectural, less crowded, with a serious Moravian wine country a short drive away.
Short city breaks
Two to three nights — Altstadt + Špilberk one day, Villa Tugendhat + a museum the next, optional wine-country pivot.
Multi-stop routes
It works as a slow Moravian stop between Prague and Vienna or Bratislava on a central-European rail loop.
Balanced pacing
The city rewards a one-anchor-per-day rhythm plus one neighborhood evening — not stacked-sight days.
Food and neighborhoods
Moravian wine bars, the cabbage market, and student-led bars around Mendel University shape the trip more than the museums.
Good trip pairings
Pairs especially well with Prague (2 hr 30), Olomouc (1 hr), Lednice-Valtice (1 hr 15), or Vienna (1 hr 30) on a central-European rail route.
PLANNING NOTES
How to shape Brno
01
Book Villa Tugendhat ahead — the timed tours sell out weeks in advance and walk-ins rarely work. The audio-guided English tour runs ~90 minutes.
02
Cluster Náměstí Svobody + the Cabbage Market + the cathedral hill as one walking loop; they sit within five minutes of each other and read as a single block.
03
Use Brno as a Moravia base — Olomouc (1 hr), Lednice-Valtice wine country (1 hr 15), and Mikulov are all day-trippable without re-packing.

Brno FAQ

Things travellers usually want to know before Brno.

How many days do you need in Brno?

Two to three nights. One day Altstadt + Špilberk, one day Villa Tugendhat + Černá Pole, optional wine-country pivot. Less feels rushed once the villa booking is factored in; more without a wine day starts repeating.

Where should you stay?

Around Náměstí Svobody or the Cabbage Market for first-time central access. Veveří for cheaper, quieter alternatives within a 10-minute tram ride. Avoid hotels far from a tram stop — the city's centre is compact but the architecture (Villa Tugendhat especially) requires public transit.

How do I book Villa Tugendhat?

Online at tugendhat.eu, often 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season — earlier for the English-guided tour. The 90-minute basic tour covers the main living spaces; the extended tour adds the technical infrastructure beneath. Walk-ins almost never work.

Is Brno better than Prague?

No — Brno is a useful counterweight to Prague, not a substitute. The trip that works is Prague + Brno (or Prague + Brno + Olomouc), not Brno instead of Prague. The cities are 2.5 hours apart by train and read as different parts of the country.

Is the Moravian wine country worth a day trip?

Yes if wine is part of the trip — Moravia produces strong Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Noir, and the Lednice-Valtice + Mikulov region is genuinely scenic. Best with a car or hired driver; the wineries open mid-morning and most are bookable in advance.

Does Brno close on Sundays?

Many smaller shops and some museums close on Sundays, but restaurants, cafés, and the main historical sights stay open. Sunday is actually one of the better days to walk the squares without crowds — markets and food halls keep different hours though.

How does the public transit work?

DPMB trams and buses are clean and reliable. Buy a 24-hour or 72-hour Brno transit pass at any DPMB kiosk — it covers trams, buses, and trolleys across the city. Validate tickets on entry; failure to validate is a real fine.

What's the biggest planning mistake?

Treating Brno as a stopover on the way between Prague and Vienna rather than its own destination. The Villa Tugendhat tour alone takes a half-day with travel, and the Moravian wine country needs another half-day minimum. Plan two real nights, not a stopover lunch.
