EUROPE · TURKEY · 1–5 DAYS

Istanbul.

The megacity bridging Europe and Asia — five days minimum if you take it seriously.
WHY ISTANBUL

Sultanahmet's historical core + Beyoğlu's contemporary depth + a real Asian-side food scene.

Istanbul is the rare city that's literally split between two continents — the European side holds the Sultanahmet historical core (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı, Grand Bazaar) and the modern Beyoğlu district; the Asian side (Kadıköy, Üsküdar) is where most locals actually live. Four to five nights is the right scale, and the trip is significantly better once you accept Istanbul as a megacity rather than a compact historical capital.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

April–June, September–October.

Mild enough for outdoor terraces and Bosphorus boat rhythm, before the summer heat peak. July–August hot and humid; January–February cool and rainy. Ramadan timing affects atmosphere; check the calendar.

WEATHER & CROWD
When Istanbul is best
April through June and September through October are the sweet spot — mild enough for terrace evenings and outdoor walking, manageable crowds. July–August hot (30°C+) and humid; the worst of the summer at Sultanahmet's unshaded squares is brutal. November–March cool and rainy but the city stays open. December–February quiet but the Bosphorus light is genuinely beautiful in clear weather.

Trip fit

Istanbul works best for…

Use these six planning lenses to decide whether the destination fits the shape, pace, and wider route you actually want to travel.

First trips to Istanbul
Istanbul suits travellers who want a megacity that bridges Europe and Asia, with serious historical density in Sultanahmet plus a contemporary food + neighbourhood scene across the Bosphorus.
Short city breaks
Four to five nights — Sultanahmet day one, Beyoğlu + Galata + a Bosphorus ferry day two, Asian side day three, plus one Princes Islands or Bosphorus boat day.
Multi-stop routes
It works as the gateway anchor on a Turkey trip — Istanbul + Cappadocia + Aegean or Mediterranean coast is the canonical multi-region shape.
Balanced pacing
The city rewards a one-anchor-per-day rhythm with serious neighbourhood walking — not stacked-monument days. Plan for slow lunches and long evenings.
Food and neighborhoods
Çiya in Kadıköy, the Karaköy fish sandwiches, meyhane dinners in Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş Çarşı's working bars, and the Eminönü spice bazaar shape the trip more than the canonical sights.
Good trip pairings
Pairs especially well with Cappadocia (1 hr 30 by flight), Izmir + Ephesus (1 hr by flight), Antalya (1 hr by flight), or as the gateway to a multi-region Turkey trip.
PLANNING NOTES
How to shape Istanbul
01
Block Sultanahmet's four canonical anchors (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı, Basilica Cistern) into the first morning while energy is fresh — they sit within 10 minutes of each other and the rest of the city makes more sense after this orientation.
02
Take at least one Bosphorus ferry (the public ferry, not the tourist boat) — Eminönü to Kadıköy or Üsküdar to the Asian side is 15 minutes and gives the canonical waterfront views. Use the Istanbulkart for all public transit.
03
Eat on the Asian side at least once — Kadıköy's Çiya restaurant and the surrounding food market is where Istanbul's deeper Turkish food culture lives, not in the tourist restaurants around Sultanahmet.
Neighbourhoods

Neighbourhoods to know

5 distinct characters. Most strong Istanbul trips pick a base, then layer two or three more.

Historical core · iconic · busy

Sultanahmet

The peninsula — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar all within 10 minutes. Walkable in a long day; the canonical first-time anchor block but the most-touristed corner of the city.

Contemporary · evening · food

Beyoğlu + Galata

Across the Golden Horn — İstiklal Caddesi, Galata Tower, Karaköy harbour, and the city's strongest meyhane (tavern) scene. Where modern Istanbul lives.

Local · food market · slow

Kadıköy (Asian side)

Across the Bosphorus on the Asian side — Çiya restaurant, Moda neighbourhood, harbour fish sandwiches. Where most locals live and where the real Istanbul food scene lives.

Bosphorus shore · bars · slow

Beşiktaş + Ortaköy

North of Beyoğlu along the European Bosphorus shore — Beşiktaş Çarşı's working bars, Ortaköy's mosque + bridge view, Yıldız Park. Strong evening neighbourhood.

Mosque · old · slow

Üsküdar (Asian side)

Asian-side ferry terminal opposite Eminönü — Mihrimah Mosque, the Maiden's Tower view, traditional Turkish bakeries. Strong morning ferry pivot for the canonical Bosphorus crossing.

Full day

Bosphorus full-day boat

Public Şehir Hatları ferry up the Bosphorus to Anadolu Kavağı + back — 6-hour round trip. Strong slow water day; the canonical Bosphorus rhythm.

Full day

Bursa

Full day

Edirne

2 hr by bus — former Ottoman capital with Selimiye Mosque (one of Sinan's masterpieces). Long day but worth it for serious Ottoman architecture.

Istanbul FAQ

Things travellers usually want to know before Istanbul.

How many days do you need in Istanbul?

Four to five nights is the sweet spot — one day Sultanahmet, one day Beyoğlu + Galata + a Bosphorus ferry, one day Asian side (Kadıköy), one day Princes Islands or a full Bosphorus boat. Less and you choose between historical and contemporary city. More than five without a side trip and the rhythm starts repeating.

Where should you stay?

Sultanahmet for first-time access to the historical anchors — easy walking to the four canonical sights. Beyoğlu / Galata for the contemporary food and bar scene with easy tram to Sultanahmet. Kadıköy on the Asian side for the most local feel. Avoid the airport-area hotels; you isolate from everything.

Should I visit Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque on the same day?

Yes — they're 200 metres apart in Sultanahmet and pair naturally. Hagia Sophia opens at 9am; arrive at opening to dodge the worst crowds. Blue Mosque is closed to non-Muslim visitors during prayer times (five times daily); check the schedule. Both are now active mosques and dress code applies — cover shoulders and (for women) hair.

Is the Grand Bazaar worth visiting?

Yes for the canonical Istanbul anchor — 4,000 shops, 14th-century structure, classic Turkish-bazaar atmosphere. But it's heavily touristed and the prices reflect that. For better-value shopping or a real working-market feel, walk to the Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) and the surrounding streets in Eminönü. Both are worth visiting; expect different rhythms.

How does the Istanbulkart work?

Buy at any Metro/tram station kiosk (₺50 deposit + initial load). Single tap on Metro, tram, bus, and ferry — discounted fares with the card. Top up at any vending machine. Don't bother with single-use tokens; the card is the only reasonable option for a multi-day stay.

Should I eat on the Asian side?

Yes — Kadıköy's Çiya Sofrası (Çiya restaurant) is one of Istanbul's most consequential restaurants and the surrounding Kadıköy food market is where the deeper Turkish regional food scene lives. The 20-minute Eminönü → Kadıköy ferry is worth doing for the harbour views alone.

Is Istanbul safe?

Generally yes. The main risks are pickpocketing in Sultanahmet and on crowded transit, plus restaurant scams in tourist-zone Sultanahmet (always check menu prices before ordering, watch for added bread and water charges). Walking solo at night is fine in major neighbourhoods. Earthquake preparedness is real but routine.

What's the biggest planning mistake?

Spending only 2 nights and limiting the trip to Sultanahmet. Istanbul's three canonical experiences (historical core + Beyoğlu food + Asian-side neighbourhood) each need a full day, plus at least one ferry or island half-day. Four nights minimum; five is more comfortable.
