Baroque density meets Alpine-edge geography.
Salzburg is a compact baroque city built into a riverbend below the Hohensalzburg fortress — Mozart's birth city, the Sound of Music location set, and the gateway to the Salzkammergut lakes. Two to three nights covers the old town, the Mirabell + Hellbrunn axis, the fortress, and at least one lake or Berchtesgaden day trip; longer if salt mines, the Sound of Music tour, or Eagle's Nest are in scope.
