How many days do you need in Izmir?
One to two nights. One night and a full day for Ephesus + Şirince. Two nights if you want to add Pergamon or a slow Konak + Kemeralti + Alsancak city day. Izmir is a base city — the city itself doesn't fill three nights without a strong specific draw.
When should I visit Ephesus?
Arrive at opening — 8am in summer (gates open as early as 7am in peak). The site is brutally hot midday and cruise ships unload around 10am. Visit the upper-gate entrance first (less crowded) and walk downhill toward the lower gate. Allow 3–4 hours; rent the audio guide.
Where should you stay?
Konak / Alsancak for first-time central access — easy walking to the Kordon and the train station for Ephesus. Selçuk (right next to Ephesus) as an alternative if Ephesus is the only draw — you can skip Izmir entirely and stay one night in Selçuk.
Is Izmir worth a stop at all?
Marginally as a standalone destination, strongly as the Ephesus base. The city's main draws are the working-port atmosphere, the food scene in Alsancak, and the Kemeralti bazaar. If Ephesus isn't on the trip, you can skip Izmir in favour of more time elsewhere.
What is the House of the Virgin Mary?
A small chapel on a hillside near Ephesus, traditionally identified as Mary's final residence after Jesus's death. Pope-pilgrimage destination with serious historical and religious weight. Strong 30-minute stop after Ephesus; included in most combined tickets.
Should I add Pamukkale?
Yes if you have 2+ nights and time to commit to a full long day or one-night overnight. The travertine terraces + Hierapolis ruins are a real attraction; the trade-off is the surrounding town is touristy and access to the terraces themselves is restricted. Better as a one-night overnight stop between Izmir and Antalya than a same-day round-trip.
Should I take the public ferry?
Yes — Izmir's ferry system (Konak → Karşıyaka, Konak → Bostanlı) is part of the city's rhythm and the canonical sunset crossing across the bay is genuinely beautiful. Use your İzmirim Kart for ferry tickets; a single fare covers most routes.
What's the biggest planning mistake?
Trying to day-trip Ephesus from Bodrum or another base. Ephesus is 3+ hours from anywhere except Selçuk and Izmir, and the early-morning timing is critical. Stay in Izmir or Selçuk for the canonical Ephesus visit — same-day returns from further away mean you arrive in the worst heat and crowd window.
