Three to four nights. One day Centro Storico + Spaccanapoli, one day Pompeii, one day Vomero + Castel Sant'Elmo + Lungomare, optional fourth for Amalfi day or Herculaneum + Vesuvius. The city's chaos is genuinely tiring; two nights minimum to settle.
Mostly yes, with caveats. Pickpocketing is real around the train station, Spaccanapoli, and the Centro Storico. Stay alert with bags, don't flash valuables, and trust your instincts. Walking after dark is fine in main neighbourhoods; the Quartieri Spagnoli is grittier but largely safe. The reputation is overblown but not invented.
Centro Storico or Vomero for first-time central access — Spaccanapoli walking-friendly and atmospheric, Vomero hillside and quieter. Chiaia for upscale Belle Époque. Avoid hotels near the main train station unless price is the only factor — the area is sketchier than the rest of the city.
Da Michele is the canonical Margherita anchor — expect a 1+ hour queue. Sorbillo, Di Matteo, Starita, and 50 Kalò are all genuinely excellent and less queue-heavy. The rule: pizza fritta (fried pizza) is also a Naples specialty and worth trying. Skip 'tourist' pizzerias near the train station.
Take the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale to Pompei Scavi (40 min). Buy tickets at the entrance or pre-book online. Download the official Pompeii app or rent the audio guide on-site — without one, the ruins are visually impressive but historically opaque. Allow 4 hours minimum.
Possible but tight as a day trip. SITA buses from Sorrento to Positano + Amalfi are gorgeous but slow; expect 2 hours each way from Naples plus traffic. Better as a 1–3 night stay in Positano or Amalfi proper. From Naples, prioritise Pompeii + the city itself; do the Amalfi as a separate leg.
Different, not better. Naples is louder, grittier, more chaotic, more food-driven; the architecture is layered (Greek, Roman, Spanish, Bourbon, modern) but less polished. If you want the canonical Italy postcard, choose Rome or Florence. If you want the real southern Italian rhythm and pizza's birthplace, choose Naples.
Visiting as a half-day Pompeii stopover on the way to Sorrento or Capri. Pompeii alone takes 4–5 hours including transit, and the Naples city itself needs at least 2 nights to land. Either commit to 3+ nights or skip Naples and use Sorrento as the Amalfi base directly.
