Is Diocletian's Palace really the old town?

Yes — it's not a museum-piece palace; it's the actual fabric of the city. Medieval houses fill the original courtyards, churches occupy Roman temples, the Vestibule is open to the sky, and you walk Roman streets that have been continuously inhabited for 1,700 years. Read about it before you visit; the layering is the point.

Should I day-trip Hvar from Split?

Possible but suboptimal — the ferry is 1 hour each way, plus harbour transfers and waiting, so a same-day visit gives you 4–5 hours on the island, exactly during the busiest tour-boat window. Strong choice: overnight in Hvar one or two nights as part of a Dalmatian coast route.

How do the ferries work?

Jadrolinija (cd.jadrolinija.hr) runs car ferries (slower, more capacity); Krilo (krilo.hr) runs faster passenger catamarans. Book online ahead in peak season — catamarans sell out and car ferries have multi-hour vehicle queues. Hvar, Brač, Korčula, and (seasonal) the all-the-way-to-Dubrovnik catamaran all leave from Split's main ferry terminal.

Is Bačvice beach worth visiting?

Yes — it's one of the few sandy beaches in Dalmatia (most are pebble) and the local picigin sport (a paddleball game played in shallow water) is genuinely entertaining to watch. Evening rhythm is strong. Don't expect Caribbean-tier sand; expect a working-city beach where locals come after work.

Is Trogir worth a day trip?

Yes for a half-day — UNESCO-listed Renaissance + Romanesque walled town 30 minutes by bus. Cathedral of St. Lawrence (Radovan's portal) is the strongest single anchor. Combine with a Marjan afternoon for a varied full day.

What's the biggest planning mistake?

Treating Split as a 24-hour stopover en route to Hvar or Dubrovnik. Diocletian's Palace alone deserves a full day, the island ferries each take a full day, and the Riva sunset rhythm needs slow evenings to land. Three nights minimum or skip the city.
